ScriptINKarl Bimshas grew up in North Massachusetts. He hated school mostly because of the long journey walking through the snow, but he reminisces about his childhood “Playing in trees and forts and picking blackberries and strawberries out of neighbors yards and eating them.”My dad had a regular 8 movie projector or camera with film that you develop and all that, and so that’s when I first picked up a camera, and that’s was definitely film and photography and all that was hobby interest pursuit that’s what I went to college for initially so anything along line directing you know film making all of that was a pursuit. Karl focused on business and leadership, “Lousy leadership really pisses me off”, so instead of getting pissed off I decided to start doing things about it and helping people lead better I worked for a big company than a slightly smaller company, and then I decided because I had wanted to work on my own for a long time so the timing was right, so I did it.” Karl doesn’t seem to have regrets about past mistakes. You learn from everything so even if it was a big mistake you would learn from it, I make thousands and lots of little ones, but biggest mistake would make me think it was a regret or something like that, So I am divorced so something must’ve happen there, I don't know if it was a mistake or it was better ran but probably be a better husband.” Fermin focused on family goals and making sure his family had no economical problems. Even though Fermin focused on his family he wants to go back and do more. “I would like to go back and say goodbye before she passed away, I was really close to my grandmother growing up, I would like have a moment just to say goodbye, I did before she passed away a few days, yeah I like to do that get a chance to do that again”. Fermin grew up in Tijuana. When times were good, he used to play baseball in the backyard. He had everything we have here. He says his main area of improvement is discipline. “My parents worked really hard and like most parents had to work hard and I wanted something better”. “When I was young I was to go to my father's shop it was a body shop, he was a car painter and I see how hard they worked and I tried to learn that craft and it was an incredible amount of work physical work”. “My father was one of those persons who use to come and work across the border and work and come back, and it was illegal back then but now he has a green card, he commuted everyday back and forth to work, and at one point he got tired of that and moved the whole family across”. Having a father who had worked constantly inspired Fermin to find a better job. His dad encouraged him to find a job that makes him think. Fermin and Karl have similar views on equality. “Fair shot for everybody based on where you are. Some people have better hands and they screw it up and some people have lousy hands and their masterful”. “Equality means equal access to everything”. Fermin goes deep and shares one of his stories, “What I notice is they say the neighbor not the black neighbor because you don't make a distinction between black white yellow whatever it is you are just a human being and to me that is equality you know because everybody looks equal”. Even though Fermin and Karl come from different parts of the world, they still share some important views on life.

INSPIRATION The film was very interesting, I loved the transitions and the voice overs, but the black and white was somewhat overwhelming. James Baldwin was excellent when sharing his stories and memories, but I would’ve loved to hear more about his personal life, even though the movie wasn’t mainly about him. There was this one scene in the movie where negroes were getting hang I felt like that was too much, but then again the truth. Maybe just show the tree itself with the ropes hanging from the branches. I decided to add some emotional scenes in there well only one when Fermin starts to talk about his grandmother, but then I wanted to bring the vibe back when Karl starts to talk and then laugh about how he could've managed his marriage. |
